A wildly funny and original novel about a Black Latina lawyer who supports patients in crisis at a New York psych ER as she herself unravels, this is the kind of book that we hope for when we think of the promise of the early 2000s: a tidal wave of female honesty that was coming to heal us all. We may still be praying on that result, but at least we have this messy, brilliant narrator to keep us company.
