In 9th grade I told a popular girl I liked her little silver belt buckle ring- I didn’t just like it, I loved it. I was a lesbian because I wanted to suck it off of her finger.

In an unbelievable display of power, she didn’t nod coolly or coo a half assed “thaaanks.” She pulled it off and gave it to me.

I still have it, but what I really have is the insane need to take the clothes off of my back and hand them to anyone who gives me a sweet compliment, because it’s fun, because it’s surprising. I’m not foolish enough to assume that it will create in another adult even an iota of the devotion I would have shown her from that day forth had she ever asked (she never did- maybe she was just… kind?)
