Before Bertha Mason was trapped in an attic, she was Antoinette, a mixed-race Creole woman living in Jamaica, ready to be consumed by a great love- one that ultimately destroys and imprisons her. At least that’s what Jean Rhys argues, as the seminal writer gives Bertha the dignity of a backstory. BTW if y’all thought Heathcliff was a dick, he walks so Rochester could run- and gaslight. Be forewarned, your devil mind might find it hot :(
